And what better way is there to start a new week than with a super concert from one of our favorite singers? Yes, you read our exclusive cover story and sipped drinks at our exclusive cocktail party at g, and on Monday night, the big event finally arrived. Donna Summer played historic Carnegie Hall for one night only to benefit Gay Men's Health Crisis. Taking the stage to the strains of "MacArthur Park", Summer dipped deep into her bag of hits and came up with such classics as "On the Radio", "Could it be Magic" and "This Time I Know Its For Real". She also gave a sneak preview of two new songs from Ordinary Girl, the musical of her life story that she is planning to bring to Broadway later this year. Later, at the afterparty at the Righa Royal Hotel, we sampled the buffet dinner and waited for the lady of the hour to arrive. Also seen waiting: Sandra Berhard, Robin Leach, Kevin Aviance, The "Lady" Bunny, Flotilla DeBarge, Anthony Clark, Stever Asher, V.J. Carbone, Andrew Reyes, Alice Harris, Robert W. Richards, and many other Summer lovers. Donna showed up eventually, wearing dark glasses and looking very much the superstar. She greeted her fans, posed for pictures and was even nice enough to briefly chat with us and sign our issue. All in all, it was a great night for everyone involved, especially GMHC, which raised $400,000 from the event.
